How Architecture Affects the Environment

Green Architecture

Architecture has a direct relationship with the environment. Studies have shown that man-made structures constitute 40% of the world’s energy use. These numbers are projected to rise in the coming years. Rapid development of human made structures is unstoppable.

Creating eco-friendly structures is the least we can do to ensure existence of future generations. Dwellings that blend with nature and housing structures that do not disrupt the environment is the need of the hour. The closely interconnected environment and architecture relationship is the crux to sustainable development. Smart buildings and creative architecture can reduce future severe consequences of climate change. Reversing the trend in climate change with smart planning is what needs to be done.

Sustainable Architecture

Sustainable architecture seeks for a positive environment and architecture relationship. Take a single building complex for instance. For starters, using environment friendly construction materials is essential. From eco-friendly concrete to biomass roofing, the options for minimal environmental impact during construction are plenty. Green construction practices are another component of green architecture.

Minimal Electricity Use

Minimal need for electricity can be ensured by designing the structure in a way that allows for maximum use of natural light and plenty air circulation. Reduced need for electricity means reduced consumption. Green buildings have proven to have a positive impact on residential and workplace environment as well as improving productivity and overall wellness. This shows the importance of environment in architecture.

Healthy human ecosystems are synonymous with buildings that are not in conflict with the surroundings. Sustainable architecture and designs are viable for both residential and commercial structures. Natural day light and better air flow are both commercially and environmentally beneficial.

Zero Pollution

We strive for creating structures with zero pollution while focusing on the environmental impact during construction. A building with reduced carbon footprint significantly reduces human driven increase in greenhouse gases. Environment friendly buildings have provisions for waste disposal. Biodegradable waste can easily be converted into useful products that can be consumed within the building complex or sold to outside parties. Ensuring a pre-planned mechanism for proper disposal of recyclable waste to the right vendors is yet another feature that is implemented in green structures.

Renewable Energy Sources

Environmental impact of electricity generation and consumption is the most important factor considered by green architects. Coal fired electricity generation plants should not be the primary source of electricity. Utilizing renewable energy sources to generate electricity is gaining acceptance as the major source of construction. Solar energy is a brilliant alternative for structures of every scale.

Energy Efficient Tools

Lastly, installing energy efficient devices is of utmost significance. Smart buildings are increasing and these are fitted with every electronic device imaginable. This means there is a greater need for electricity. The primary source of energy needs to be non-fossil fuel. Usage of a commercially viable renewable source of energy for construction purposes is highly recommended.

Good architecture is when the structure has a complementary relationship with the surrounding natural systems. Buildings that are adaptable to the surroundings and cause zero environmental degradation is the hope for the future and architecture plays a huge role in preserving the earth’s ecological health.
